The Vatican’s University of Music

The Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music serves as the University of Music of the Holy Father.

As an institution established by and affiliated with the Vatican, the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music is of its nature linked to the heart of the Catholic Church and her institutions. This bond enhances its authority and importance in the field of sacred music, distinguishing it from similar institutions throughout the world.

The Institute fosters a harmonious relationship between faith and artistic expression. Students learn to make music, and to understand it not only as an art form, but also as a crucial expression of faith. During term time, Holy Mass is sung every morning in the Institute’s church and is broadcast worldwide via Vatican Radio.

The institute welcomes students from other Christian denominations and other religious backgrounds.

Graduates of the Institute often take on significant roles within the Church as music directors, organists, choral conductors, and educators. Their work contributes to the spiritual and cultural life of the Church globally.
